Interior design consultancy for a modern architect designed home

Service: ‘Interior Essence’ consultation
Brief
The owner of this modern home, surrounded by woodland, wanted to redesign and redecorate a bedroom. The space featured large windows that offered beautiful views, but the room itself had architectural features that posed decorative challenges due to the proportions, scale, and light. Despite the abundance of glass, the room was often cool and dark due to its position.
The desired style for the room was traditional, patterned, and feminine. However, the architecture of the house had a masculine energy, with strong, clean lines. The client had great taste and a selection of beautiful visual inspirations, but the client’s instinct was that simply transplanting their favoured look into the room wouldn’t work. They approached me for guidance on how to blend the two opposing forces and make the space feel balanced and harmonious.
Service
During our time, we worked together to deconstruct how the clients preferred aesthetic could be customised and transformed to work with the modern architecture. I was able to show them and explain how to merge these qualities practically and pleasingly in the space.
I revealed to them how to tackle the room’s tricky proportions and scale, ensuring that every element would contribute to a more refined, elegant and harmonious space. We resolved how to equalise the coolness and darkness of the room despite the large windows, ensuring that it felt inviting and cohesive, throughout the day and night and the seasons.
Throughout I was also able to source specific items for the room online with the client, narrow down paint colours and fabrics and find visual examples to demonstrate my recommendations and insights. By the end they had a clear understanding of how to resolve the space and bring their vision into reality in a way that acknowledged, unified and honoured both the architecture of the room and the style they wanted to express.
I followed up with a detailed document that outlined our discussions, including recommendations for paint, fabrics, furniture, accessories, and visual references, giving the client everything they needed to confidently move forward.

Outcome
By the end of the consult, the client had revitalised certainty and confidence, as well as specific products, paint colours and design solutions for the bedroom. With a richer understanding of how to approach the space, and a clear direction for how to bring that vision to life, they now had a solid strategy to move their project forward.

Reflections
The consult in this instance was a collaborative process where we turned an initially challenging space into a nuanced and complete design direction. It was a joy to work with my client, who had both flair and purpose but just needed some guidance on how to combine their vision and the architectural reality of the space. The outcome wasn’t simply a guided redecoration of the room; but also an offering of additional knowledge, giving my client the tools and confidence to transform the space themselves, knowing they could now achieve the vision they were seeking.
