Colour story for Georgian house

Service: ‘Petite Colour’ Consultation
Brief
When the client came to me, after a flood in the ground floor of their home, the remedial works were complete and the space was essentially a blank canvas, walls freshly plastered and a bespoke kitchen due to be fitted imminently. The decorator and flooring company were already booked, and key decisions such as cabinetry colour, paint palettes, and flooring finishes needed to be made quickly.
Although confident in their own taste, the client felt overwhelmed by the volume of decisions and the tight timeline. They wanted a cohesive colour scheme that would connect everything, existing and new furniture, textiles, and finishes, while reflecting the house’s architecture, period, light and their own personal style.
A snippet of the colour selections for the kitchen and utility area. The colours where chosen specifically to work with the practical demands of the space, the materials, natural light and the period & architecture of the house, as well the client’s style and what they wanted to communicate.
Service
After a short initial call to understand the scope and how I could help, we scheduled an in-home petite colour consultation. In advance, the client kindly shared floor plans, photos of their furniture and fabric samples, and their Pinterest boards, which allowed me to arrive well-prepared and already attuned to their aesthetic.
During the consultation, we worked with their existing samples alongside a curated selection I brought with me. Together, we developed a cohesive colour story for the entire ground floor, choosing wall, trim, ceiling, and cabinetry colours to sit beautifully with wallpapers, textiles, worktops, handles, and both new and existing furnishings.
Each space was considered in terms of its function, natural light, and desired mood. A key part of our process was exploring how to balance the character of the house with the client’s own sense of style, and that of their partners too, something they’d been struggling to reconcile, but which we worked through together.
Although our focus was colour, we also touched on layout, lighting, materiality and flow, because everything in an interior is connected. Even within a few hours, there was room for rich, wide-ranging conversation that gave the client renewed clarity and confidence.
By the end of the session, we had created a full ground floor colour plan that brought consistency and character to the home. What had felt overwhelming for the client now felt exciting, and I was happy to leave them feeling inspired and ready to move forward.
Afterwards, I followed up with a tailored document outlining every chosen colour, placement, and the finishes required. I work across several trusted paint brands to ensure not only the most appropriate individual paint choice but also the most nuanced and individual colour stories.
Outcome
Although the client had a clear sense of their own style and a great eye, they had found the process of bringing everything together in tight timeframe daunting. Our time together gave them a clear path forwards and a strong baseline and flow for their interior. The colour consultation revitalised their joy and excitement for the project and gave them the confidence to use colours they loved but hadn’t previously been sure how to incorporate (and allowed them to discover some new favourites as well).
Together, we created a beautifully considered and practical colour scheme that set the tone for the rest of the refurbishment. The scheme was timeless, personal, and true to both the house and the people living in it.

Reflections
This may have been a colour consultation, but its value went far beyond choosing paint. It was about stepping back with my client to see the full picture, bringing calm and assurance, shaping direction, and renewal of creative joy into what had become a somewhat pressured process and a source of anxiety.
It was also a lovely reminder of how powerful collaboration can be, working closely with a client and helping them to develop and strengthen their ideas and bring further clarity to their personal expression.
